This month marks ten years since I created my first blog ‘Dreaming of the Country’. I had just got married, finally had my own home and was looking for a place to research eco and sustainable living. None of my real-life friends were really interested in it so instead I found a community that were sharing ideas online. At that point blogging was really taking off as a way to journal so I started my own blogging journey to keep in touch with far-flung friends and family and to share my love of photography and simple living.
Since then I have used several different platforms under a couple of blog names, but writing about our life has continued to be incredibly important to me. Not only do I have a record of my whole married life, moving houses, new jobs , the birth of our kids and how we felt through it all, I have also met some wonderful people online who I now consider friends.
Over the last couple of years journaling and taking photos has taken a backseat due to our growing family. Life is too exhaustingly busy to write and my arms are too full of children to carry around a DLSR camera…and yet I miss having a record of what we are up to. Blogging is a good way of making you stop and assess what you’ve achieved and how you feel about life; the last two years has been a complete blur and I’m sure that’s in part due to the fact I don’t have the anchor points of writing about what we’ve done.
So that brings us here…a new blog with a new name.
As a stay-at-home mum it’s really easy to feel like I’ve completely lost my identity, but blogging is something I can do for me. Yes, life is hectic and it feels like I don’t have time to write but I hope that committing to a new blog might give me a creative outlet, especially encouraging me to take more photos. I also want to create a record for our family to look back on in years to come.
I feel a bit sad to be leaving the ‘Dreaming of the Country’ name behind as it has been such a big part of my life, and I’m a bit worried I’ll lose all my followers(!), but the decision to move domain is mostly practical; I wanted to move from Blogger to WordPress.org as it gives far more opportunity to create a more flexible and better looking site. I could have chosen to import all my previous posts from Dreaming of the Country but blogging has changed a lot in the last ten years and it was easier to have a clean slate in regards to privacy and copyright.
(I will be re-posting some of my favourite articles over the coming months so if there is anything you want to see again then please let me know!)
As for the new name, I always find it difficult and a little bit pretentious to chose a title so I hope you’ll just see the same little-old-me writing away instead a particular heading. However, as a family we’re in a time of change. The name ‘Dreaming of the Country’ was all about us as a couple hoping that one day we could make a home in the countryside and in the next couple of months we will be doing just that; Josh has a new job which will take us to live in a little village in rural Pembrokeshire. It seems fitting that after a decade we’re finally able to fulfil a dream and I’ll be continuing our journey writing from the vicarage table.
I have loved the opportunity of connecting with people through blogging so I hope you will continue to follow along with our journey as we open this new chapter. Please let me know what you want to see more of and I’d love it if you could share anything you enjoy on social media to spread the word about our new site.
Welcome to my new blog!
